Building Relationships and Faith-Friendly Workplaces

Through open conversations, LINC is working to promote interfaith understanding—transforming workplaces into environments of respect and belonging.

by Krissi Echevarria, DEI Program Manager, LINC

It is said that on average, employed individuals spend 1/3 of their lives working; I say, let’s make the most of it (gettysburg.edu). Social contact and collective purpose are 2 latent benefits of employment that I am sure many of us longed for during the pandemic (Jahoda, 1982). LINC works to address these needs by building workplaces and communities where everyone feels welcome, gets rooted, and thrives. My role as the DEI program manager situates me to build bridges between communities, values, and goals, for collective success and well-being. Focusing on building relationships in the workplace promotes authenticity, transparency, and open communication among team members.

LINC has been fortunate to participate in the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation’s CORE Fellowship program for the past 2 years. The CORE Fellowship Program calls for organizations to take on a project that will increase the organization’s overall capacity to deliver equitable services and operate equitably within the community at large. Through LINC’s engagement, we have initiated the process of updating and expanding our resources, connections, and community partnerships to ensure we are centering the stories and needs of those we serve and the communities we operate.

The keystone of LINC’s business model is our Community Transition Support services. Through these services, LINC welcomes over 400 relocating individuals and families moving to the Lehigh Valley for employment annually to promote retention within the Lehigh Valley. Through our work with the CORE Fellowship, we have chosen to reevaluate the resources and connections we recommend to newcomers in order to center equity in our services. We are working with local BIPOC business leaders, and community partners to gain an understanding of the needs of employees in fostering inclusive workplaces and easing the transition to the Lehigh Valley.

To get started, I and our Community Transition team, sat down with Murtaza Jaffer, Partner at EBC Printing & Signs to learn how we can promote and develop faith-friendly workplaces in the Lehigh Valley to support our Muslim-identifying colleagues. Here is what we learned:

Recognize Islamic Holy days and Holidays celebrated.

Traditionally, Fridays are the Islamic holy day. Offering flexibility and extra time to accommodate afternoon prayer on Friday can be a way to honor Muslim traditions.

Allow for flexibility in schedule to encourage and respect daily prayer routines.

Provide appropriate space for prayer. Learn how to set up an appropriate prayer or wellness space within your workplace. Wellness spaces can be used for prayer and meditation for employees of any faith.

Promote interfaith education in the workplace for all employees through workshops, seminars, or events.

Support Muslim employees by covering topics including halal-friendly food, and the history and intention of the Hijab.

We are honored for the opportunity to gather in community with members of diverse backgrounds and learn and share experiences. This initial meeting is just the beginning step on a journey of relationship building, to understanding and providing secure and welcoming services to all our clients.

Special thanks to Murtaza Jaffer,  Mustafa Jaffer, and Amir Famili.
