At Crayola, fostering creativity and inclusivity go hand in hand. Read this local success story for insights into one of LINC’s founding DEI community member organizations.

At Crayola, our mission is to help parents and educators raise creatively-alive kids. We work every day to cultivate diversity and create a culture of inclusion – one that grows through sustained action, demonstrates care for every life experience, inspires new products and content, and builds a sense of belonging in which every employee can be their very best. We believe a diverse workforce provides a broad spectrum of ideas and perspectives and enables us to understand our consumers better.
Our cultural values guide how we treat each other, our communities, and how we conduct business:
Crayola sees a world where the inherent creativity of children is fully nurtured into adulthood, filling the world with more curiosity, imagination, joy, connections and fulfilled lives. That’s why we strive to create products, content, and experiences that allow children to represent themselves and the world authentically through creativity and self-expression. One example of applying inclusive thinking to our product development process is our Colors of the World crayons.
In 2020, Crayola launched Colors of the World crayons, 24 specially formulated crayons representing more than 40 global skin tones. These crayons were designed to meet the needs of today’s increasingly diverse world and promote the importance of inclusion and self-expression. As our countries and generations grow more diverse, Crayola is excited to
have a product that mirrors and supports the growing diversity in our world. We believe this will have a positive impact on how children express and color themselves into the world they see around them every day.
In 1992, Crayola recognized the need for diversity and inclusion within the children’s arts and stationary category with the Multicultural platform launch including crayons, ultra clean washable markers, colored pencils, washable paint and model magic air modeling material. Consumers reacted positively to the 1992 multicultural product launch, and in 2020 Crayola was proud to launch the Colors of the World crayons to increase the colors we offered. The Colors of the World crayons allow children to fully and accurately represent themselves and the world around them through creativity, imagination and self-expression.
The 24 specially formulated colors within the Colors of the World crayon packs reflect 40 global skin tone shades, a widely recognized standard of inclusivity in beauty and cosmetics. The 24 new colors were developed leveraging the basic elements of cosmetic foundation: undertones and skin tones. Crayola Colors of the World crayon colors encompass three undertones – Rose, Almond & Golden – and range in skin tone colors from Extra Light to Deepest. The Colors of the World packaging features skin tone color elements, color panels and authentic color names to help kids find the shade that best represents themselves. Each crayon is wrapped in a gradient skin tone label with the color name in English, Spanish and French, and has a realistic color name – such as Light Golden, Deep Almond and Medium Deep Rose – to help kids easily identify the shade they need. Consumers have had a positive reaction to our crayons, thrilled to choose their shade to color themselves in self-portraits and to draw their friends and family. Due to the positive consumer response, we have expanded our Colors of the World product line, which now includes crayons, markers, colored pencils, paints, and model magic.
